Recommended Bike Rack for Flat Towed Vehicle

Question:

Can you think of any downsides to having the bikes and rack mounted on the back of SUV that is being by a motorhome? It does make things a couple feet longer, but it will be shorter than the last time we did this with a longer motorhome. Might we need to do something extra or buy a certain model rack to prevent swaying? Thank you.

You'll want to use a bike rack that's specifically designed and tested for use on the rear of a towed vehicle, and here's why. The rear end of a motorhome due to it's longer overhang can usually get pretty bouncy. Some of this bouncing is transferred to the towed vehicle, even though the tow bar can articulate to a degree.

Because of this, I could not recommend using a trunk mounted bike rack like the # Y02634 on the rear of a towed vehicle.

One of the most versatile bike racks we currently offer is the RV Rider, part # HLY64FR from Hollywood Racks. The rack can be used on passenger vehicles like a car, truck, SUV, van or a motorhome. It can be used on flat towed vehicles or on the back of a 5th wheel trailer. The only situation where it couldn't be used would be on the back of a bumper-pulled travel trailer.

Due to its unique center-mast design, the rack can handle bikes with fenders, bikes with step through frames, electric bikes weighing up to 80 lbs apiece and bikes with tires up to 5 inches wide.

Because of the tons of versatility offered, the Hollywood Racks # HLY64FR is what I'd recommend.
