4 Bike Rack Solution for Ford F-150 Towing Camper Trailer

Question:

I am looking to buy a ford f 150 2.7 litre or the 3.5 litre trying to sort out towing before I buy one. If I attach a 4 bike rack to the receiver and pull a pop up camper will my hitch tongue weight capacity go down by 50. I read in the description that it will not be affected if we are using the ball mount for the pop up and the receiver for the bike rack. This is from the description: Notes: The receiver portion of this unit is designed for hitch-mounted accessories only. Do not use with an additional ball mount to tow a trailer. When mounting an accessory in this receiver, your hitchs tongue weight capacity will be reduced by 50 percent. When using both the ball mount and the receiver the tongue weight capacity is not affected. However I also read this expert response on your site: Expert Reply: Since the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount # D210 reduces the weight rating of your trailer hitch by 50 when a bike rack is mounted in it youd have to verify that 50 of your trailer hitch on your 2018 Chevy Colorado is enough to safely handle the loaded tongue weight TW of your trailer plus the weight of your bike rack and bikes. A properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15 of the weight of the trailer. If 3,300 lbs is with your pop-up loaded then that means your TW range is 330 lbs - 495 lbs. If you do have enough weight capacity then you could use the Kuat Beta # B202-2 which weighs in at 12.6 lbs and can handle up to tow bikes that weigh 40 lbs each. If you will be exceeding 50 of the TW for your trailer hitch then we also having alternative bike racks like the Jack-It # LC429756 which fits above your tongue jack or a towing bike rack like the Swagman Trailhead # S63390. So I am confused! Will my hitch weight capacity be reduced by 50? Thank you Jaime I really need a solution for pulling a pop up camper and 4 bikes with a truck. Pop up camper GVR is 2300lbs, unloaded 1555lbs, cargo capacity 745lbs. Thanks

This is a great question and I apologize for the confusing info on the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount part # D210. It's capacity in various configurations has changed a few times over the years but currently (and accurately) if you were to use the # D210 with a bike rack in the upper opening and towing a bike rack on the lower platform the tongue weight capacity of the hitch is not reduced.

Now since there's somewhat limited clearance between the hitch opening and the trailer and you have a truck I'd go with the 4-bike Yakima Hangover part # Y02484 which carries the 4 bikes side by side and not one after another which adds quite a bit of length. This rack can carry bikes in two orientations. I attached a picture of the better clearance option for your setup as well as a link to a review video for more info.
