Snow Tire Chain Recommendation for 265/70R17 Tire Size on 2012 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD

Question:

I live in western VA and normally manage with 2wd. Occasionally in larger storms 4wd is helpful. I want to be prepared for larger snow events. For example, this week we are targeted for a 6-12inch snow event. That may not sound like a lot but put it on a steep hill in the shade and it is noticeable. My owners manual recommends chains only on the rear. Im looking for practical recommendations. 1. Can I squeeze something like Glacier Tire Chains - PW3029C on the front? How do I check for clearance. I wonder if GM was thinking normal big tire chains versus these very low profile models. 2. For the rear, what do you recommend for occasional use? Same Glacier Tire Chains - PW3029C or something beefier? Thank you

If your owners manual specifies tire chains only on the rear of your 2012 Chevrolet Suburban, then I would also recommend to use tire chains only in the rear. Sometimes the reason the manufacturer does not recommend tire chains on a vehicle is because of clearance, but it also could be for other reasons.

Both of the snow tire chains and snow tire cables will work great in snow conditions. The difference is the snow chains will give you better grip in more ice conditions because the chain links will bite into the ice where as the snow cables tend to slide over the ice. The snow chains will make a little more noise on dry pavement as compared to the snow cables.

The Titan Chain Square-Link Tire Chains, part # TC2326, is a good choice for snow chains on your Suburban. These snow chains give a lot of chain links between the tire and the snow/ice for excellent grip and they are easy to install to your vehicle.

If you are wanting the snow cables I would recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains for Light Trucks, part # PW3027C. These snow cables will fit your 265/70R17 tire size and have case hardened steel rollers for durability.

I am including links to video reviews on the snow tire chains and cables I mentioned above.
