Why Is My Hitches Capacity Cut In Half When Using A Hitch Extender?

Question:

"If you hitch can handle the weight even with half its capacity, then this could be a solution for you." Question: why did Adam E add remark it reduces weight 1/2 capacity. I’m putting about 100lbs of bikes and rack on top receiver and tow Jeep in lower receiver..tow weight 3900 lbs. RV hitch rated 4000 lbs . So I don’t understand his comment. Can you clarify. Thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:

Since your hitch is rated for 4000lbs and you're using 3900 lbs for hauling your Jeep and hauling 100lbs of bikes, cutting your weight capacity in half when using a dual hitch extender # MPG544 will send you over the capacity. With any extender you will cut your hitches capacity in half. So now with the dual hitch extension, your hitch only has a 2,000lb capacity. I mentioned that because I was afraid the hitch extender would cause that issue.
