Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2013 Honda CR-V
Question:
Hello, I own a 2013 Honda CRV. I have never owned any style of bike rack, there are literally dozens of manufactors and models all claiming to be the best! I would like to buy a four 4 bike model, but, would like to take in consideration of safety transporting, convience and a budget around $200. WOULD YOU PLEASE be so kind as giving a few recomendations. Thank You for your time

I will be more than happy to make some bike rack recommendations for you. I can give you my top picks that fit the criteria that you have provided but there are some other important factors you will need to consider. Then I can provide a more specific recommendation. The year, make, and model of the vehicle, the size trailer hitch, and the type of bikes is all important.
A 2013 Honda CR-V like yours could have a Class I, II or III hitch with either a 1-1/4 inch or 2 inch receiver so it is very important to have that information when making a final decision so that we know the rack will fit (or not). I have linked an FAQ that will help you.
Ok, lets start looking at racks. You referenced one of my top choices, the Thule Hitching Post Pro, # TH934XTR. Thule is a big name in the bike rack industry. They are known for making a quality product. This particular rack features anti-sway cradles to keep the bikes from knocking into each other. It can also tilt down for greater access to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked a video review showing the rack on a 2013 CR-V.
My next choice would be the Swagman Trailhead, # S63380. This is a similar rack in design as the Thule rack. It has anti-sway cradles and the ability to tilt down. What makes it different than the other 2 racks is the rise in the shank. This rise allows for better ground clearance. I have linked a video for it as well.
Each of these racks will fit a 1-1/4 or 2 inch hitch. However, if you have a Class I trailer hitch you can only carry 2 bikes at most even if the rack is designed to carry more. This is because a Class I trailer hitch cannot handle the torque of having more bikes further from the receiver.
Only Class II and III trailer hitches can handle 4 bikes.
