Recommended Bike Rack For 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI With 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver
Question:
Im having a 1.25 hitch receiver installed in my 2017 VW GTI. The receiver will be below the bumper and recessed about 6 inches from the edge. I will need a bike rack that has a long stem I dont know the technical word for it. Im guessing the stem will have to be about 10+ inches for the rack to clear the bumper, not to mention space so the bike mount/holder doesnt hit the bumper. I was hoping for a rack that the bike sits on. Would any of your racks work, or should I look at a hitch rack where the bike hangs? I need just a one- or two-bike hitch. Thanks.

As long as the 1-1/4" Trailer hitch receiver you are having installed on your 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a Class II receiver I recommend the Saris Freedom Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # SA4412B as it can accommodate up to two bikes weighing up to 60lbs each, and measures 12" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest wheel tray so you will not have any issues with the rack contacting the rear humper of your vehicle.
If your receiver is a Class I I recommend the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches - Tilting - Gray # SH12G which is compatible with Class I hitches, and measures 11" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the hitch, but that measurement changes to 7-1/2" with the rack folded so you may not be able to fold the rack without it hitting your rear bumper.
This is a premium option, if you would prefer a more cost effective option I recommend going with the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # S63360 which measures 11" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack, and is compatible with a Class I hitch, but is a hanging style rack instead of a platform that you mentioned.
I included a video for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
