We have some great options for you but first we will need to provide the additional wiring necessary for the brake controller, we need to have the 7 pin arrangement. As you already have the 4 pin installed, you will simply need to convert it to a 7-way with # ETBC7. This comes with everything needed to install a brake controller and convert the 4-way to a 7-way.
For a brake controller I am going to provide you some options but I will first state that I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a best selling brake controller, cost effective with ease of setup and functionality. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. It is incredibly reliable, works well and is easy to use. It can also be easily transferred to future vehicles.
Another recommendation I have for you is the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR. This too is a great option and also a proportional brake controller but has the feature of mounting the control knob on your dash or console. If the P3 will be in the way, cause you to bump against it while driving, due to location under the dash, then the Redarc is something to consider. Or, if you like the idea of having this small unobtrusive control knob then this is a good option. However, by nature of its installation, once installed it will remain with the vehicle.
The last option I will provide is the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles, # C51180. This is a new design and very different from more traditional brake controllers, it is Bluetooth and works with your smart phone. Lots of great features and performs as well, same as the other options I listed but this can easily be moved from one vehicle to the next in moments; as long as each is vehicle is properly wired. If this transferability between tow vehicles is a plus for you, then I would consider the Echo. Otherwise as stated, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195.
