Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2007 Ford F-150 that Weighs Over 5,000 Pounds
Question:
The tow bars recomended are pushing the weight limit of what I would be towing. A f150 with 600lb of fuel plus tank and pump weight, 2 tires on wheels big truck tires and 200lbs of tools, oil, grease cooler etc. What about a bar rated for 8000lbs or 10000lb? Thanks

Expert Reply:
Since your truck is pushing the limit of 5,000 pounds for some tow bars then I recommend Roadmaster base plates # 495-1A and using Blackhawk tow bar, # RM-422, with safety cables # BX88197. The tow bar and cables are rated for 10,000 pounds.
Next you will need a lighting kit like # RM-154 for frequent flat towing or # RM-2120 for a magnetic kit for infrequent towing.
And finally most states require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR proportional system. It applies the trucks brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual to for more specific information on flat towing your truck. I have included some helpful links on flat towing for you to view.
