Determining Correct Roadmaster D-Ring Tow Bar Adapter For 2009 Jeep Wrangler With Smittybuilt Bumper

Question:

I have a 2009 jeep wrangler JK, with a smittybuilt xrc Gen 2 stubby bumper. I bought the roadmaster nighthawk tow bar. What size D ring 1inch or 3/4 adapters do I need for this? Thanks

The correct D-Ring Tow Bar adapter will be dependent on the thickness of the D-Ring tabs that are on your Smittybuilt xrc Gen 2 stubby bumper.

If the D-Ring Tabs are 1" thick you will need the Adapter for Jeep D-Ring Bumper Mounts to Roadmaster Motor Home Mount Tow Bars - 1" Thick # RM-035-1, or if your D-Ring Tabs are 3/4" thick you will need the # RM-035 instead. Both of these options will work with the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar w/ LED Lights - RV Mount - 8K # RM-676 you mentioned.

You will want to reach out to Smittybuilt and make sure that your specific bumper is rated for flat towing before you flat tow your 2009 Jeep Wrangler.

To complete your flat towing setup you will need trailer wiring, and a supplemental braking system. The # RM-676 includes safety cables so you will not have to purchase them seperately.

For wiring I recommend the RoadMaster Nighthawk All Terrain and Sterling All Terrain Towing Combo Kit # RM-9284-2 which includes the wiring you will need, but also includes locks to secure your tow bar and storage bags for when you are not flat towing.

Moving on to a supplemental braking system I recommend taking a look at the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR as it is a very easy to install option that gets completey removed when you are done flat towing meaning it can be used in multiple vehicles if needed. You will also need the 12v Outlet Kit # RM-9332.

Lastly you will more than likely need a high-low adapter to level your tow bar to your tow vehicle so I have included a link to a helpful article that goes over how to measure for the correct adapter, and a link to all of our high-low adapters for you to take a look at.

It is always a good idea to check the recreational towing section of your vehicles owner's manual for any flat tow restrictions and for any special steps required to make your vehicle ready to be flat towed.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
