Parts Needed to Add 5-Way Connector to Trailer and Tow Vehicle

Question:

My GF inherited a boat and trailer from her dad but we only have a 4 pin flat on the car and the trailer from trail-rite has a square plug with a coiled pig tail that goes into a flat 7. I need to unplug it and buy an new cable to connect the trailer to the tow vehicle. The trailer has surge brakes so should just be a 4 of some time. Can send or post a picture of helpful? Thanks!

Ok, so we have exactly what you need, and since your trailer has surge brakes what you'll need for the trailer is a 5-way trailer connector. Since it sounds like you want to use those surge brakes you will also need to cut off your vehicle's 4-way and add a 5-way connector to the vehicle. So what you can add is the following:

- Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends # HM47890

To splice in the wires on these connectors you will need the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05745-10.

I have added links below to a couple of help articles I recommend checking out about trailer wiring that should be useful for you.
