Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch For 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD W/ Gooseneck Hitch
Question:
Hi. I’m looking to buy my first used 5th Wheel RV. We have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 6 1/2 bed. It has a gooseneck that is no longer used from pulling the horse trailer. We have inexpensive used Demco 6077 and 6081 available to us. Can someone help me figure out our best option for modifying our truck? Should we seek out a traveling hitch like the BandW that can attach to our gooseneck? Or remove the gooseneck and add rails to accommodate the Demco hitch? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I would be happy to recommend the parts needed to tow a 5th wheel trailer with your 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD with a 6-1/2' bed.
There are a few different options for you but I will go over the pros and cons of each.
As long as the Demco hitches you mentioned are slider hitches that use the above bed industry standard rails, either will work perfect for you. Since your truck has a bed shorter than 8' a slider is recommend to allow you to make sharper turns without having the nose of your trailer contact the cab of your truck.
The down side of this option is you will need to remove your current gooseneck hitch to install 5th wheel rails like the B&W Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWRVK2500 which are confirmed to fit your truck.
The other option is if your current gooseneck hitch is the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit # BWGNRK1067 you can simply use the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3400-5W.
If you do not have the Turnoverball you would need to remove your current gooseneck hitch and install the # BWGNRK1067 to use the Companion # BWRVK3400-5W.
This option will give you a gooseneck hitch and a 5th wheel hitch, and when the 5th wheel hitch is removed your bed will not have above bed rails getting in the way.
The down side is if you do not have a Turnoverball gooseneck hitch already installed, it will be a bit more expensive than the above bed rail option.
The best option for you really comes down to is keeping a gooseneck hitch important to you. Since the Turnoverball/Companion combination gives you the ability to tow either a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer, and keeps your bed free from above bed rails it is the option I recommend.
I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
