Which Weight Capacity To Follow When Using A Cargo Carrier On A Hitch With Different Capacities
Question:
Hello. I have the C12091 hitch trailer and the curt 18145 cargo carrier on my 2014 Ford Fusion SE. I am confused about how to calculate the max weight I can carry on these two items. Are you able to help? Thank you.

When looking at weight capacities between a hitch and a cargo carrier you always want to go by the lowest number between the two. The 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier Item # C18145 has a weight carrying capacity of 500lbs however; the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Item # C12091 on your 2014 Ford Fusion has a max tongue weight of 350lbs. Even though the cargo carrier can handle 500lbs you want to go by the 350lb max tongue weight of the hitch receiver.
If the hitch could handle 500lbs and the cargo carrier could only handle 350lbs then you would go by the cargo carriers weight because it is the lowest of the two.
