Recommended Weight Distribution for 2012 Jayco 1007 Tent Trailer Towed By 2009 Nissan Pathfinder
Question:
Hi there - I have a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder SE factory tow and a 2012 Jayco 1007 tent trailer. I am looking for a weight distribution hitch that would be appropriate for my needs. The jack stand on this trailer is in the middle of the A frame as compared to being on the side. Interested in an option with sway control if available.

According to my research, the Jayco 1007 has a dry weight of 1820 lbs and a GVWR of 2550. This means that with empty propane and water tanks and completely empty of gear, your tent trailer weighs 1820 lbs. Once tanks are full and gear is added, the trailer can weigh no more than 2550 lbs. This places your tongue weight somewhere in the range between 200-400 lbs. To this figure, you will need to add the weight of any gear stowed behind the rear axle in the cargo area of your Pathfinder.
Weight distribution systems are rated by the range or maximum tongue weights they can handle. Ideally, you want your trailer tongue weight to fall near the middle of the effective range of the system you choose. Knowing the actual fully-loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer (plus weight of cargo in rear of tow vehicle) is an important factor in choosing the correct system for your needs. I have linked you to a FAQ article that describes how to determine your trailer tongue weight.
Lets assume that you determine that your tongue weight is around 450 lbs, with the trailer and cargo area of the tow vehicle loaded as you would typically have it. The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # RP66558 would be great choice. The Reese Steadi-Flex is effective on trailers with tongue weights ranging from 400-600 lbs, and would be very effective against trailer sway. The weight distributing shank is included, but the appropriately sized trailer ball, # 63845 for a 2 inch or # 63847 for a 2-5/16 ball is sold separately.
