Determining Correct Axle To Replace 4500lb Dexter Mobile Home Axles On Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

Converting dexter axles from perimeter lugs to a standard stud/drum. Outer bearing is KLM67048, Inner bearing is 68149. Originally a tri axle equipment trailer. I will convert to dual axle, both with brakes. Please advise hub and drum kit.

Based on the bearing combination of # LM67048 and # L68149 I was able to determine that you have 4500lb Dexter Mobile home axles.

I have a replacement option for you, but unfortunately there are no hub and drum kits available for the spindle on your mobile home axles with that bearing combination. This is pretty common as mobile home axles are really designed for one time use, and often use odd bearing combinations that makes finding replacement parts or parts to upgrade the axle nearly impossible.

With that said, to be able to add trailer brakes to your trailer I recommend replacing the axles with an axle that uses standard bearings which will make finding replacement parts now and in the future much easier.

To determine the correct replacement axle, you will need to know the hub face to hub face measurement, and spring center to spring center measurement of your current axles as shown in the included diagram. The hub face to hub face measurement is the most important since the spring seats can be removed and rewelded in the correct place if needed.

For example the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern # 8327820-EB has a hub face to hub face measurement of 89", and a spring center to spring center measurement of 74". If these dimensions match the measurements of your current axle this would be a great choice as it has a 5200lb axle rating, and includes electric trailer brake assemblies and hub and drum assemblies keeping you from having to purchase them separately. This axle uses inner bearing # 25580, outer bearing # LM67048, and grease seal # GS-2125DL which are included.

If you find that your current axle has a different hub face to hub face measurement, just let me know and I would be happy to see if we have a compatible axle.
