Weight Distribution for 2017 Toyota Tundra w/ OEM Sway Control Pulling 7000 lb Travel Trailer

Question:

Good Morning, I own a 2017 Toyota Tundra that has Trailer Sway Control TSC build into the truck. I am pulling 7000 pound travel trailer 30 ft. I am looking for a weight distribution/sway control hitch that is compatible with the TSC. I was using a EZ Lift with chains with a sway control bar but I was cautioned I had to turn off the TSC. Unfortunately, the only way to turn off the TSC would require turning off the traction control and turning on the AUTO LSD. Toyota does not recommend driving in that setup for an extended period of time. Any suggestions. Thank you

I spoke with the folks at Progress Manufacturing who manufacture the Equal-i-zer and Fastway weight distribution systems. My contact told me that the TSC system on your truck is passive when it's on standby, it won't activate until a sway event occurs. The Equal-i-zer and Fastway e2 are designed to help prevent sway from occurring in the first place. My contact told me that the TSC and a friction based system like the Equal-i-zer or the Fastway e2 would be fully compatible. They'll work just fine together without needing to turn off the TSC.

Assuming 7000 lbs is the fully loaded weight of the trailer, the fully loaded tongue weight should be somewhere between 700-1000 lbs. For mild to moderate sway, I'd recommend the Fastway e2, part # FA92-00-1000 for fully loaded tongue weighs up to 1000 lbs, or for tongue weights above 1000 lbs, go with part # FA92-00-1200 which is good for up to 1200 lbs of fully loaded trailer tongue weight.

For moderate to severe sway, you'll want to go with an Equal-i-zer system which resists sway via metal to metal contact at the point where the spring bars sit on the trailer frame brackets and at the point where the spring bars mount to the weight distribution head. I'd recommend the # EQ37120ET, which is tailored for tongue weights up to 1200 lbs.

The Equal-i-zer system includes the 2-5/16 trailer ball, but its sold separately as part # 63840. With either of the systems, you'll need a 1-7/8 inch thin walled socket to install the ball. If you don't already have one, we offer them as part # EQ70-00-4800 .
