First, when choosing a bike rack, you will first need to consider the hitch size on the vehicle. You will have either a 1-1/4 inch hitch or a 2 inch hitch. The hitches we carry for the 2012 Mercedes ML350 are all 2 inch hitches, see link.
Next you need to consider how many bikes you want to carry and the styles of the bikes. Platform racks are great for alternative frame bikes like those with step through frames or wide frame tubing. Hanging style racks can carry these types of bikes but you will need to use an adapter like # TH982XT to carry them level and provide better ground clearance.
The most popular 2 bike rack we carry is a platform style rack, the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670. It holds the bike wheels in cradles and the padded hook secures the frame.
If you like the hanging style more I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. It features anti-sway cradles, it can tilt down, and it has an integrated cable lock. I have included some links that cover each of these bike racks for you. I have also included a link to an FAQ with tips on choosing a trailer hitch mount bike rack.
