Would Thule EasyFold XT or RockyMounts Backstage Clear Spare of Jeep Wrangler

Question:

We are comparing 2 bike racks for a Jeep Wrangler with full size spare tire ... Thule Easyfold xt and Rockymounts Backstage. 1- we have read that an extender will reduce the load maximum by 30-50. Is this true? 2- in your website photo of the Rockymounts installed on the back of a Wrangler, is there an extender attached? 3- while tilting the Thule rack can the Jeep back door swing open? Thank you for your help.

You are correct that hitch adapters/extenders do cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent. When we had the chance to install and use the RockyMounts Backstage part # RKY10002 on a similar Jeep Wrangler we didn't have to use a hitch extender to get enough clearance. I attached a review video for this rack on the Wrangler that you mentioned.

Best option is to measure the distance from the center of your hitch pin hole out to the furthest point out on the rear of your spare. If it's less than 9-1/2 inches this rack will clear.

The EasyFold XT Part # TH903202 would require 8 inches so it has less clearance but it is a really great rack that is very easy to use.
