Weight Distribution for a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Towing a 2012 Jayco Jayflight Trailer

Question:

I will be towing a 2012 Jayco Jayflight 26foot BH with a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500. The trailer has a dry tongue weight of 580 lbs and I was wondering if this distributor would be enough or should I go bigger. Your help is greatly appreciated.

To choose the proper size weight distribution system you will need to go by the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and then add to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I have included a link to an FAQ article on calculating tongue weight.

The loaded weight is likely to be higher than 580 pounds. If you will not be carrying anything behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle then a system rated for 400 to 800 pounds would probably be the best bet. Though the 550 to 750 pound system you referenced, # PS49582, might do the trick. It all depends on the tongue weight. If you come up with a higher tongue weight than 750 pounds, let me know and I can make a different recommendation.

The Pro Series system that you referenced comes with everything you will need including a sway bar and a 2-5/16 inch ball. I have linked instructions for you. However, if the trailer weighs more than 6,000 pounds then you will need a second sway bar, # 83660.

I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control for you.
