What is Difference Between Wiring Batteries in Series or Parallel in Terms of Voltage

Question:

How do you connect two six volt batteries to not only double the voltage but, to double the amperage at the same time?

If you wire up a battery bank in parallel the voltage stays the same and the amperage increases, whereas if you wire them up in series the voltage increases but amperage does not. I remember the difference by looking at it like this:

If you were to line up the volts in a "series" the number would increase as you count them down the line. And anything in parallel stands next to something but would necessarily increase the number/volts.
