How to Properly Weigh my Trialer to not Exceed my Vehicles Towing Weight Rating

Question:

I have a 2016 GMC Savana 3500. The towing capacity is 10,000lbs and tongue weight capacity of 1000. I just purchased a trailer with tongue weight of 860, which, when loaded, will put me close to or slightly over 1000. I have a distribution system that allows for up to 1200 tongue weight. Should I get a new hitch bar/receiver for the van, as well, that allows for a little more hitch weight room?

When looking up your 2016 GMC Savannah 3500 it has as you said a max tow rating of 10,000 lbs. and 1,000 lbs. tongue weight. This is the limit of the vehicle unfortunately and not that of the hitch. With that said even if we were to add a heavier hitch the capacity of the vehicle still has to be abided by.

I would take care to not load the camper too heavy in the front end in a way that would exceed the tongue weight limits.

I would not worry about switching spring bars as the range of a 1,200 lb. bar is generally in the 800-1,200 lb. category.
