Wiring Recommendation to Flat Tow a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta Behind a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan
Question:
What is the best wiring solution for a tow vehicle with separate amber turn lights and a toad with separate amber turn lights? My concern is that the supplemental brake system in the toad will override the turn signal during braking if I try to use a 4-wire system. Tow = 2001 VW Eurovan Toad = 2002 VW Jetta I have a converter not yet installed for the Eurovan that produces a 4-wire signal but I have the concern above.

There are several ways that you can wire your Toad depending on a few factors including how frequently you want to tow the vehicle, the type of supplemental braking system used, and if you wan a more permanent or temporary solution for lights.
If you will not be towing the Jetta often then I recommend a magnetic kit like # RM-2120 that will plug into the 4-Way flat once installed on the Eurovan. This bypasses the vehicle wiring so you do not have to worry about using a brake light relay to keep the braking system from interfering with the lighting signals and vice versa.
After you install the 4-Way on the Eurovan if you want a more permanent solution for the Jetta you will need a 6 diode kit with converter, # 154-792-118158. The 6 diodes allow you to keep all the functions separate on the vehicle and negate the need for a brake light relay.
If you do not already have a supplemental braking system I recommend the Even Brake # RM-9400 proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have included some helpful links on flat towing and wiring that should help you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for more information on recreational towing of the vehicle.
