Coupler Upgrade on Old Utility Trailer for 2 Inch Hitch Ball Compatibility

Question:

Question re: Couplers I have 2 trailers Boat and Utility both rated at 2,000 lbs GVWR. The trailers have 1-7/8 and 2 ball sizes. The 1-7/8 boat coupler is old and should probably be replaced. Is there any reason why I shouldnt convert it to a 2 coupler? The tow vehicle/hitch is rated to 4,400 lbs.

There isn't a good reason not to update to a 2 inch ball coupler for convenience of using one standard 2 inch ball mount for both trailers. You will simply need to recognize that your trailer capacity will be rated for the highest compacity of the weakest component. This means you won't increase the towing capacity of your trailer by upgrading the coupler even if the coupler itself is rated higher.

I've linked the page to the coupler options for your convenience.
