Troubleshooting Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Maxing Out Braking Force
Question:
The brakes of my trailer suddenly started locking up when I apply the brakes. It started in the middle of a drive. I suspect its a brake controller failure. I have a Prodigy P2 brake controller. It is normally set to 6.0. Now it goes to 14.0 max as soon as I apply the brakes lightly. Any suggestions on what to look for? Buy a new one? Which one would you recommend?

Since the Tekons Prodigy P2 # 90885 was working correctly before it could definetly be an internal issue in the controller but I would first check that the gain and boost of the brake controller is set correctly. To check this use the manual override lever and adjust the blue wheel on the left of the controller to set your gain which is the max braking force, and use the blue button on the right side to change between boost levels. If you have the gain set to 6.0 but it is maxing out you will need to replace the trailer brake controller.
For a replacement trailer brake controller I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which offers a easy to read LED screen with a built in diagnostics function that is easy to understand. they great part is you wont have to wire in a new harness as the P3 # 90195 will use the same wiring and connector as your P2 # 90885. You will just need to use the new bracket for the P3 as it is different.
I included a video of the Tekonsha P3 # 90195 for you to take a look at.
