Trailer Brake Options for Acura MDX

Question:

Hello! We are purchasing an RV for the first time, and we will be towing it with a 2012 Acura MDX. We have checked and rechecked and it looks like everything on the weight is okay. The trailer we are purchasing is 3100 lbs, and our vehicles manual says our vehicle will tow 5000 lbs. Our vehicle manual though says that we shouldnt use a weight distribution hitch, but it does recommend sway bars. I was wondering what your recommendation would be. Also, do we need to install a brake controller as well before we pick it up? Our car does have the towing package by the way. I really appreciate your help! If you could provide links to specific products so I could purchase them, I would appreciate it. Thanks again! (Customer has ball mount and hitch ball

Congratulations on your first RV. Adventure Awaits! My first recommendation is to follow any guidance offered in your Acura Owner's Manual. Since your MDX already has a tow package, ball mount, and hitch ball, the rest will be easy.

You mentioned in an email that you have already towed your trailer and do not feel the need for any sway control at this time.

All you need now is a trailer brake. There are two types to consider. First, the old-fashioned kind that requires wiring in your dash and a brake controller installed under your dash. I prefer this type as it is independent, has it's own display, and has a physical lever there to actuate the brakes if you need. For this style I would recommend the Tekonsha # 90195 Brake Controller. You will also need the Tekonsha # 3070-P wiring adapter.

The second option is the Curt # C51180 Wireless Brake Controller. It simply plugs into the 7-pin connector on the back of your vehicle, then the trailer plugs into the other side of that. From this point on it operates as you programed it to do from your phone. The advantage of this choice is being able to move the controller from one vehicle to another.

I have attached links to these products and some review videos.
