Will the Thule Cargo Bag # TH868 Fit on the Crossbars on a Toyota Highlander

Question:

My cross bars on the Highlander have a maximum space of 32inch between the crossbars. Since the bag is longer than 32inch is it OK if the bag hangs over the cross bars? If so, how much beyond the crossbars can it hang without the crossbar straps reaching too far under the bag? The bars themselves are each about 2.5inch wide. Another option would be to place the bag so the front of the bag sits on the front cross bar and strapped to the this front cross bar, then just sit the rear part of the bag on the rear crossbar unstrapped since this rear crossbar would be under the bag but not close enough to the rear crossbar to be strapped. Of course the side straps would be strapped to side bars.

Ideally you will want the bag to fit between the crossbars but it can set on top of them. The instructions (linked) state that if possible, place the bag between the bars so that it fits snugly between them. It can also ride on top of the bars if needed. The bag attaches to the crossbars using straps that are attached to the bag.

Make sure that you stay within the manufacturer recommended weight capacity for your roof. Check your owners manual for weight capacities. I have included a video review of the Outbound.

You will not want to leave the back of the bag detached because an abrupt stop could cause it to fly forward.
