Hitch Adapter For An 1-1/4 Hitch On A 2017 Mazda CX-5

Question:

I have this accessory [https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/hitch-bike-racks/thule-apex-xt-swing-4-_-9027xt] and didnt realize until after they installed that Mazdas only offering is a 1-1/4inch receiver. My vehicle is a 2017 Mazda CX-5. Do you have any concerns about using an adapter and/or which parts would you recommend and why?

Helpful Expert Reply:

An 1-1/4 hitch for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 has a 350lb max tongue weight. Adding any hitch adapter to a hitch reduces the tongue weight by half so your maximum tongue weight with the adapter is going to be 175lbs. You can add an adapter, like the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver Item # HTAD which allows you to use your Thule Apex Swing XT 4 Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Swinging Item # TH9027XT. Keep in mind the bike rack has a max single bike weight capacity of 37.5lb and a maximum 4 bike weight capacity of a 150lbs. So carrying 4 bikes at maximum you would be 15lbs under the maximum tongue weight when using the adapter.
