You are correct. The E1 error code indicates the trailer is not connected. Since you are getting the same error code on two different vehicles it is most likely the trailer side. I would start with checking the female pins on the plug. You may have to get a flashlight and look down inside the pins. There could be something small that is just not allowing the pins from the truck to fully seat into the trailer plug. Sometimes the pins will expand or spread just enough that they don't make good contact with the male pins on the truck. You can use a small flat head screw driver and close the gap on the female pin enough that the male and female pins fit together snug. You can also do the same thing on the truck side by spreading the male pin just a little. If that doesn't work you are going to want to move to the wiring itself. Follow the cable back until you locate each separate wire. Check each wire to make sure they still have the protective coating. If you find one that has been nicked and is showing bare wire, that needs to be fixed because it could cause a short. Check your ground wire where it is attached to the frame and make sure it is in good working order. Make sure the ring terminal doesn't move.
