Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2009 Ford Escape
Question:
What bike rack Would be best for 3 ladies bikes? Do you really need the bike locks?

To carry 3 ladies bikes with your 2009 Ford Escape, I would recommend using a hitch mounted bike rack. There are 3 bike trunk mount options for your vehicle such as the Yakima HangOut 3, # Y02638, but a hitch mounted bike rack will be the safest and most convenient route.
A hitch mounted bike rack like the Swagman Titan 2 Bike Rack, # S63400, would insert into a 1-1/4 inch or 2 inch trailer hitch receiver and has a tilting feature that will allow you to access your rear cargo area without having to remove the bike rack each time you want to open your rear hatch.
I have attached a demonstration video of the Swagman Titan bike rack for you to check out as well as one for the Yakima bike rack if you were interested in a trunk mounted bike rack.
If you do not have a trailer hitch installed on your vehicle, then I would recommend installing the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # C13651. We have installed this hitch on a 2009 Escape so I attached the video and installation instructions for you to check out.
Since you will be carrying ladies bikes, you may want to pick up a few Easy-Out Bike Adapter Bars, # 64005. Some womens bikes have step through frames that do not have a top horizontal crossbar. This adapter will allow you to mount the bikes easily and safely on a bike rack.
Bike locks are not absolutely necessary, but they are a good option to deter theft. One thing to consider about the Swagman bike rack is that it includes a cable lock that will lock all of the bikes on the bike rack. I would also recommend a Swagman Locking Hitch Pin, # S64029, to secure the bike rack to the hitch.
