Can the Convert-A-Ball Gooseneck Adapter Be Used With A cushioned 5th Wheel Pin Box?

Question:

What is the reason that this adapter can’t be used with a cushioned not air ride 5th wheel pin box?

I have a couple of solutions – just not with the Convert-A-Ball.

The Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G gooseneck adapter cannot be used with most cushioned or air ride pin boxes, or rotating pin boxes.. The additional flex of two cushioning devices creates leveraged angles that can break both pin box parts and truck parts. I checked with my engineering contact at Convert-A-Ball specifically about your Roto-Flex and it is not compatible with the Convert-A-Ball adapter.

There are two solutions. If the most important aspect is an empty truck bed, then you are looking for a replacement of your Roto-Flex pin box with a standard pin box that will be compatible with the Convert-A-Ball adapter. I can recommend a pin box if you give me the four digit model number as it appears on the manufactures plate. There are only a few like 1621/1621HD, 1716, or 1116. If your number (which tells us the bolt pattern) is 1621 then you can use the Lippert LC # 1191151 pin box rated for 18,000 pounds.

The other solution is keeping your Rota-Flex pin box and placing a fifth wheel hitch in the bed of your truck. If you go that route, take a look at the Demco Recon # DM8550045 Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Hitch Adapter. This adapter clamps right on to your goose ball quick and easy. (If you have a recessed goose ball then you will want the # DM8550046.) this will be the easiest solution by far!

I have attached videos for these products.
