Transmission and Oil Cooler Recommendations for 2008 Dodge Caliber
Question:
I do not have the factory installed towing package on my 2008 Dodge Caliber SXT. Should I add an engine oil cooler or transmission cooler for long distance towing?

If your CVT transmission has lines that run from the transmission to the radiator (some do, some do not), you can install a transmission cooler. A transmission cooler is inexpensive insurance that would do a great job of extending the life of your transmission.
If this is the case, a combination transmission/oil cooler would be a good choice. The Derale Combination Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler, part # D15902 might be a good choice for you. The Cooler Kit includes everything necessary to install your cooler if your Caliber uses rubber hose for the transmission lines. If your transmission uses steel lines, you would need the appropriate compression fittings. For 3/8 lines, use part # D13032 or for 5/16 inch line, use part # D13031.
The cooler would install directly behind the grill, in front of the A/C condenser and radiator. The transmission cooler hoses would tap into the transmission return line. The thermostatic sandwich adapter would install on the oil filter landing, with the oil filter installing onto the 22x1.5 sleeve nut. The oil lines would run from the oil cooler to the sandwich adapter. Keep in mind that the sandwich adapter is 2 inches thick. You will need sufficient clearance under your oil filter to enable you to install and remove the filter during oil changes.
If your transmission does not have lines, you would still benefit from an oil cooler like part # D15502.
Keep in mind, installing a transmission and/or oil cooler will not raise the towing capacity of your Caliber, which is 1000 lbs, according to my research. Exceeding the manufacturer towing capacities is not recommended.
