I would always recommend storing a ball mount of any type and in any geographic location because I personally hate bumping by shins or knees on them! I have also seen some get corroded and stuck in the hitch receiver so that is another reason to take it out when not in use.

The outer parts of the Self-Locking, Adjustable, Aluminum Ball Mount, # DTALBM6800, will withstand those harsh Indiana winters, salt brine, debris, and all. The unit is made of aluminum so it is strong and corrosion resistant, much better than powder coated steel.

The inner mechanisms are made of steel but they are pretty well protected by the rest of the ball mount. The key holes have rubber covers to keep out moisture and the anti rattle nubs and hitch pin buttons will be in the hitch. Still there is always a chance that some moisture or other grimy stuff can get in there. So the best way to prevent that from happening is to store it when not in use.

The balls are chrome-plated so a simple cover like # FA82-00-3220 for the 2 inch ball or the # FA82-00-3216 for 2-5/16" ball would help. I have linked a video review of this ball mount for you to view.
