Recommendations for a 5 Bike Carrier on a 2010 Honda Odyssey and Tips on Softening Rack Straps
Question:
Im looking for a 5 bike hitch mounted rack for 2010 Odyssey. I like the Thule Apex and vertex. But my biggest concerns with these racks are that the straps tend to be very hard to use. I am wanting to find a rack that my wife can use herself without struggling with the straps. Is there anyway to soften these straps so that my petite wife can use the rack herself? What are your thoughts?

We have bike racks that fit the requirements you need, but let me address your concern regarding the straps first. The straps on the bike carriers we carry must be durable to ensure safe and secure transportation. While the straps tend to be stiff at first, they will become softer over time. Another tip is to either place the straps in direct sunlight or indoors prior to transport. This will allow the straps to soften before you need to use your bike rack.
I recommend the Thule Apex XT 5 Bike Carrier # TH9026XT. It is intended for 2 inch hitch receivers and features cradles that absorb road shock to protect your bikes. It will also tilt down to allow access to your van's cargo area and comes with a built-in handle that makes it easy to carry, install, and remove the carrier.
For women's bikes or bikes without a horizontal bar, I recommend the Thule Bike Adapter # TH982XT, which allows a bike without the horizontal bar to be transported in a more level position as well as increasing the ground clearance during transportation. I have provided a link to a video review of this product.
