Will Yakima FullBack 3-Bike Rack Damage 2019 Mazda CX-5

Question:

I recently read an article that recommended buying a trunk rack for 3+ bikes even though planning to carry only 2. This allows more space between the 2 bikes, so damage from bike to bike contact much less likely. It seems that the Yakima Fullback carriers secure the bikes in ways that would prevent contact. What is your opinion? Also, there is a photo in the reviews of a Mazda CX-5 that was dented by the Yakima Fullback 3. This makes me cringe since my new Mazda 2019 CX-5 is only 6 mos old. Was the rack installed correctly? Why do you think the vehicle was dented? Thanks

To keep your pair of bikes spaced out as much as possible so they don't damage each other, getting the Yakima FullBack 3-Bike Rack # Y02633 instead of the 2-bike version is certainly a smart idea.

This bike rack is a fit for your 2019 Mazda CX-5, and it won't damage your vehicle so long as you take the proper precautions. There are specific instructions to mount the rack in "Anchor Mode", which you can see on page 5 and 6 of the linked installation instructions. Yakima also says to be sure to remove the rack when not in use; if these things are done there should not be an issue with your 2019 Mazda CX-5 and the Yakima FullBack 3-Bike Rack # Y02633.

One thing to keep in mind is that with any alternative frame bike like a step-through frame, or a small child's bike, you'll need a horizontal mounting point when using a hanging rack. If that's the case for you, an adapter bar is needed, the Bike Frame Adapter Bar # 64005.
