If you've got a 5/16" diameter hole, those are usually on coupler latches, so it sounds like the Master Lock Adjustable Trailer Coupler Lock - Stainless Steel # 2847DAT is what you're looking for. This lock has a 1/4" pin and is designed for 5/16" latch holes, so it will fit your application.
