When choosing a weight distribution system, ideally the tongue weight of the trailer will fall right in the middle of the effective range of the system. It is important that you find the tongue of your trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow and that you also include the weight of any cargo loaded in the bed of your 2009 Ford F-150 STX behind the rear axle. Since a weight distribution system distributes the weight from the rear axle to all axles, the weight of additional cargo behind the rear axle must be considered along with the trailer tongue weight.

I have attached a help article that explains different methods on how to determine the tongue weight of your trailer for you to check out.

The Pro Series Weight Distribution System with Friction Sway Control, # PS49901, that you referenced has a tongue weight capacity of up to 550 lbs. The tongue weight of a trailer is typically calculated to be 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight, but it can fluctuate greatly with horse trailers, especially if your 2003 Hawk horse trailer loads the horses closer to the back or front of the trailer.

The Pro Series system may be effective on your trailer when it is unloaded, but once you have the horses and gear loaded, you may find that you will need a higher rated system like the Pro Series system, # PS49582, that has a tongue weight range of 550 lbs to 750 lbs.

I have attached the installation instructions for each of the weight distribution systems that I mentioned for you to check out. If you can send me the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, then I would be happy to make a more specific recommendation for you. I have also attached an FAQ article on weight distribution for you.
