Does 2009 Damon Avanti Towing a 22 Enclosed Trailer Need Weight Distribution

Question:

I have a 2009 Damon Avanti that states it has a 5000lb towing capcity and tongue weight of 500lbs. My trailer is a RoadHouse 2215 weighing 4300 llbs and not sure what the tongue weight is. Not loading anything but surboards and bikes so the additional wiegh may increase by a few hundred. What would you recommend to get down the road safe? Brake Cotraol, Weight Distribution, New hitch?

For a brake controller, I would suggest a proportional brake controller. A proportional controller uses an internal accelerometer that was developed for guided missile systems that will determine how quickly the vehicle is stopping during braking events. The amount of voltage sent to the trailer brakes will allow the trailer and tow vehicle to brake at about the same rate, which means that neither the vehicle or the trailer brakes are doing all the work. This results in less wear and tear on the braking systems, as well as predictable and safe braking. I can highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 or the P3, part # 90195. The major difference between the two units is that the P3 offers a more user-friendly interface. Both controllers feature diagnostic functions that help diagnose problems in the trailer braking system, but instead of displaying error codes like the P2, the P3 will actually display what the problem is.

I would love to sell you a weight distribution system, but only if you truly need one. Typically, a weight distribution system is called for when the trailer weighs more than half the weight of the vehicle. Since the weight of your Avanti is well above that, I am not sure what benefit you would gain by using a weight distribution system.

If sway is a problem, more often than not, you can combat it by ensuring that your trailer is loaded properly. Make sure that the weight is evenly distributed from side to side. Moving heavier cargo toward the front of the trailer will go a long way towards eliminating trailer sway. If readjusting way that your cargo is loaded does not fix a sway situation, you might benefit from using a friction sway control unit like part # 83660. You would also need a sway control tab for your ball mount, part # RP26003.

From your question, I was unable to determine if your Avanti already has a hitch, or if the 5000 lb towing/500 lb tongue weight figure you referred to was for the coach itself. If you already have a hitch, none of the RV hitches we offer have a higher capacity than what you mentioned, so remaining with your current hitch would be your best bet.

If you are needing a hitch, we do offer some multi-fit RV hitches. The correct hitch for your needs will depend on how far apart the frame members are at the rear of the coach. If that distance is longer than 46 inches, Curt offers the # 13703 for frame members that are up to 72 inches apart. The hitch offers a 500 lb tongue weight/5000 lb towing capacity. None of the RV hitches we offer are rated for use with a weight distribution system.
