For a brake controller for your 2016 Ford F-150 I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

To install it requires the install harness part # 3035-P and it'll be wired up minus a few connections you'll have to make under the vehicle frame. For a new 4-way part # HM11140735.

If you check out the picture I attached you'll see where to find the trailer wiring under the rear of your 2016 Ford F-150. The two wires pointed out are the ones you'd need to extend to a 7-way like the part # 37185. The blue one is the brake output and goes to the blue wire of the 7-way and the orange goes to the black wire. Your current 4-way then plugs into the 4-way of the # 37185 and you'd be good.
