I have 8 wires. I have all the colors colors you mentioned, but what is the 8th one for

If you have 8 wires ran to the trailer connector area of your vehicle most likely the 8th wire is a third brake light circuit used for installing a camper shell. If this wire is only active when you apply the vehicle brakes this would verify that.
