The Thule Gateway Pro 3 Bike Rack part # TH78VR is a great option for a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It however as with any trunk mount bike rack on any vehicle will need to be removed in order to open the hatch. The problem is that the hatch is not rated for the extra weight of the rack and it could come into contact with the vehicle.
If you want to be able to open the hatch with a bike rack attached you'd have to go with a trailer hitch mounted bike rack. Let me know if this is something you are interested in.
