Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller on 2017 BMW X5
Question:
I am trying to figure out what i need for a brake controller and how to install it, I have the 7 way plug as well as the BMW 4 pin plug in the rear of the vehicle. BMW has been entirely unhelpful with this other than sending an amazon link for a Takansha P3 Thanks

In order to install a brake controller on your BMW X5, you really just need the brake controller, since you've already got a factory 7 way plug. The caveat here is that your BMW does not have a plug in adapter available to install a brake controller, so installation of a brake controller would require hardwiring into the vehicle's wiring.
If you've already got a brake controller, you will need to look under the dash to find the 12v power from the battery, the brake control wire from the 7 way connector and the stop light switch on your vehicle, which is likely located behind the brake pedal on the vehicle and sends a signal to your brake lights when it is depressed. You'll need a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 in order to test the functions of the wires, which are located under the driver side kick panel in most cases. To make the connections to the appropriate wires you'll likely need some Heat Shrink Butt Connectors like the # DW05745-10.
I've gone ahead and linked the instructions to a Tekonsha P3 which has some instructions on how to hard wire in your controller that you might want to refer to.
If you want to avoid the hard wiring, the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 is the perfect solution for you. This controller plugs right into the 7 way connector on the back of your vehicle and is controller via your bluetooth enabled smart phone (iOS 8.0 / Android 4.4 or newer required). This controller provides you with proportional braking for your trailer and requires no cutting into the factory wiring on your 2017 BMW X5, so it's the best solution available. I've also linked a quick review video of this controller, as well.
