Two Hot Blue Wires on Hopkins Trailer Brake Controller Installed on a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

Question:

I recently installed a hopkins brake controler on my 04 chevy silverado 2500hd. It has 1 large blue wire and 1 small blue wire. When the brakes are activated either with the controller or the brake pedal both wires test hot. The trailer brakes wont work unless both wires are conected to the brake post. The small wire remains hot when the key is on but large wire is only hot when the brakes are applied with the pedal or controller. Even though the small wire is hot when the key is on the trailer brakes are not activated.

Where are you testing these wires? If it is on the trailer side, one of the wires could be from a breakaway kit.

If this is occurring on the truck side where the brake controller is connected you might be testing the 12 volt circuit, which is supposed to be black, the input from the brake switch, which should be red, and/or the output to the 7-Way, which should be blue. The other wire, white, is the ground.

The 2004 Chevy Silverado actually has a port under the dash where you can just plug in a brake controller. The correct harness for a Hopkins controller is # HM47795. The red wire has to be placed in the correct location according to the attached instructions. If it is not in the correct location the controller will not function properly.

I have also included a link to an FAQ that covers installation of a brake controller on your truck.
