Every store I speak to says these steps will wobble loose because they mount with self tapping sheet metal screws . I have a 2012 silverado 2500 HD

Those other stores are not entirely correct. You will need to drill into the metal of the truck and the steps are held on with nuts and bolts. I have linked the instructions for you to view. page 3, step 12 states to use the 5/16 x 1-3/4 hex bolts and nuts in the drilled holds to mount the brackets to the truck. There are sheet metal screws used in the installation, not self-tapping because drilling is required, but they are not the primary fastener used to hold the steps on the truck.
