Replacement Brake Assemblies for Trailer with 3,000 lb Axle

Question:

Hi. Can you replace a 3000 lb axle 11/2 in brake shoe assembly with a 3500 lb 21/4”” shoe on the 3000 lb axle? What do I need to watch for with differences?

Helpful Expert Reply:

If you need new brake assemblies for your 3,000 lb axle your best option is to stick with the size you have and use the part number # K23-472-473-00 for a replacement. The temptation is to use more powerful brake assemblies which would give impression that they'd have more braking power but it does not work like that. Instead when you do this it gets much harder to get proper brake application as basically it'll seem like they want to either lock up or not work at all.
