Can 2 Inch OEM Hitch Receiver on 2016 Ford Escape Be Used With Weight Distribution

Question:

I have a 2016 Ford Escape with factory installed tow package. It is listed as a class 2 receiver, but is 2” by 2” instead of the 1 1/4” receiver. Can I use a WD hitch with it? We want to tow a 7x12 foot cargo trailer with one axel that weighs 1600 lbs empty and roughly 2100 lbs with stuff in it. The trailer has brakes and we had the 7pin connector and brake controller installed this week.

You might be able to. Take a look at the rating sticker affixed to the hitch. It it lists two separate rating categories one with TW and GTW for towing and one with TW and GTW for weight distribution, then you can use a weight distribution hitch. If it only lists ratings for towing, then you cannot use weight distribution with that hitch.

If the sticker on the hitch states you can indeed use weight distribution, the Reese # 66557 Steadi-Flex system you'd looked at would be perfect for the weight of your trailer. You'll also either need the # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch or the # 63845 for a 2 inch trailer ball.
