Looking at all the running boards we offer for your truck, the best choice for you is going to be a step that has a large area for your foot but also a large drop to help you get in and out of your 2005 Dodge Ram. The Carr Custom-Fit Side Steps # CARR124032 are going to be 17" wide and give you a 6" drop. This will be a lot lower than your current running boards. They come in polished aluminum or with a powder coated finish # CARR124034. Both will have the same width and length step.
If you're looking for a black step, the Bully Alpha Series 5" Adjustable Step # AS-9000TX has a nice black finish to it. It is wider than the Carr steps, won't have as low as a drop but will be adjustable.
If you're having a hard time getting into your tool box you can grab a step like the Bestop TrekStep # B7540715. This will give you a step right next to your tool box to make it a bit simpler to grab what you need.
TrekStep has another step # B75304 for the back of your truck, to make getting in and out of your truck bed easier.
These will all make getting into your truck, tool box and bed a lot easier!
