Weight Distribution System for a 2012 Expedition Hauling 2 Horse Trailer with 7000 lbs GVW

Question:

Hi. I just purchased a 2012 Ford Expedition with the Heavy Duty Tow Package. It has a GVW of 9200 pounds with a weight distributing hitch. Which one should I choose? I will be hauling a 2horse trailer with tack/dressing room - gvw 7,000lbs. The vehicle will usually have 5 or 6 passengers, a cooler, etc. Also, do you have a recommendation for a Good brake controller? Thanks!

The most important thing to consider when choosing a weight distribution system is the tongue weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow. Anything loaded behind the rear axle in your 2012 Ford Expedition will contribute to the tongue weight as well.

I have attached an article that explains how to determine the tongue weight of your trailer. When choosing a weight distribution system, you should choose a system that has a tongue weight range that encompasses the tongue weight of your trailer.

I would also recommend a weight distribution system that includes sway control like the Reese SC or Strait-Line weight distribution systems. I have attached a link that contains all of our Reese SC and Strait-Line weight distribution systems for you to check out.

For example, the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Dual Cam Sway Control, # RP66084, has a tongue weight range of 600 lbs to 1,200 lbs. If the loaded tongue weight of your trailer falls within this range, then I would recommend this system. This system also includes dual cam sway control which is one of the most effective sway controls on the market.

If you can send me the tongue weight of your trailer including the weight of any cargo that you will have loaded behind the rear axle in your vehicle, then I can make a more specific recommendation for you.

For a brake controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885. This is one of the easiest brake controllers to set up and use. Since you have the Heavy Duty Tow Package, you will just need the Plug-In Wiring Adapter, # 3035-P, which will plug into the factory brake control connector under your dash. I have attached the installation instructions and an installation video on a 2011 Ford Expedition for you to check out.
