Hopkins Brake Controller Does Not Sense Trailer When Connected to a 2012 Chevy Silverado with ITBC
Question:
I just bought a 2012 Chevrolet LTZ Z71 with the ITBC. I have a 2002 Load trail flat bed trailer. The ITBC doesnt recognize that the trailer is there. The dealership told me that the trailer isnt compatible with the truck and to have an aftermarket brake controller installed. I installed a Hopkins brake controller model # HM47295. Still doesnt recognize the trailer is present when it is plugged into the 7 way socket. Im getting power to the brake controller and to the 7 way socket at the back of the truck. I then borrowed my neighbors Ford f-150 with a factory integrated brake system, plugged the trailer into the 7 way socket and the trailer was instantly recognized. So, I have eliminated the trailer as being defective. Does anyone know or have any experience with with the ITBC not recognizing the trailer? Im racking my brain here!

If the trailer has an electric over hydraulic braking system, then the Hopkins controller, # HM47295, will not work. You will need a compatible controller like the P2, # 90885, which has an electric over hydraulic mode. I have included a link to the instructions for you.
If you just have regular electric brakes then the issue could be that the controller you have is not mounted properly (see instructions) or you need to turn up the power level on the controller. Being tilted too far up or down, tilted to one side, or turned to the side can cause the controller not to work properly and if the power is set too low it may not recognize the trailer.
