In regards to a gooseneck trailer, the coupler overhang is essentially the "neck" of the gooseneck.

To make sure you have enough clearance to go over road bumps and make sharp turns, you want to have at least 6 inches between the overhang of your gooseneck trailer and the bed rails of your truck. This is measured from the bottom of the overhang to the top of your truck's bed rails, as shown in the attached photo.
