How can you access the cargo area with bikes loaded on rack?

The simple answer is, you can not access the cargo area with bikes loaded on a Thule OutWay 3 Bike Rack # TH56BV.

There are styles of bike racks that allow for trunk access, but due to the nature of trunk mounted bike racks, you cannot open your trunk with one of them loaded.

If you have a hitch on your Toyota Highlander you could get a swing-away rack like the Yakima FullSwing, # Y02465. This rack can swing away with bikes loaded on it to allow for complete access to the cargo area of your vehicle. You will need a hitch with a 2 inch opening to use this rack. If you do not have a hitch email me back with the year/make/model of your vehicle I will recommend a hitch for you.
