Troubleshooting Manual Slide and Brake Pedal Reading on Draw-Tite Activator II Brake Controller

Question:

I just installed the Activator 2 on a NBS 07 Chevrolet 2500. With the manual slide, the red decimal illuminates, but it does not activate the brake lights. When pressing the brake pedal, no decimal illuminates on the Activator 2, but the brake lights work.

You could have a couple different issues taking place here. If the manual slide illuminates the brake controller, but does not activate the trailer brakes, then there is a problem somewhere on the brake output wire. This is going to be the blue wire coming from the brake controller. This blue wire should be connected to the dark blue from your vehicles electric brake control wiring harness.

The other issue that you may have is that the red wire from the brake controller is not connected to the brake light signal. This should be the light blue/white wire on your trucks wiring harness. You could also use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test each wire coming from the brake controller for proper function.

Assuming the brake controller is wired properly, the black wire should have constant 12 V power, the white wire is ground, the red wire should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed and the blue wire should have power when the brake pedal is pressed or when the manual override is activated.

I have attached an article that explains how to install a brake controller on your 2007 Chevrolet 2500 as well as the installation instructions for the brake controller. There is a troubleshooting guide in the installation instructions that explains possible issues the brake controller can have. I also attached a short video of our technician using a circuit tester to test the wires from the brake controller that you can use as a reference when testing your wires.

If you are unable to find the issue following these steps, then let me know what you come up with and we can take further troubleshooting steps.
